VC funding levels are more a reflection of the overall economy than the viability or otherwise of OSS. There are lots of companies supplying support and consultancy services for OSS; maybe the reason that the VC funding is lower is that such companies don't actually need VC funding?
Indeed: open source companies are unusual in that they can grow organically much more easily than conventional software companies, since many costs are lower.
