NSA Spying Revelations Start To Cause Outrage In Europe; China Next?

News that the NSA has unfettered access to most of the leading Internet services inevitably has an international dimension. After all, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google and the rest of the Naughty Nine all operate around the world, so spying on their users means spying on people everywhere. Indeed, as Mike explained earlier today, the NSA is actually trying to quell criticism by selling this news as something that purely concerns non-Americans (although that's clearly rubbish.)

Brazil's Marco Civil Not Dead Yet; Yahoo Voices Support

Techdirt has been following the story of Brazil's innovative Marco Civil project, a civil-rights based framework for the Internet, for a while. Last time we wrote about it, it had been shelved following some aggressive work by lobbyists. As we noted then, it wasn't clear whether it would be resuscitated or not, but here's Kuek Yu-Chuang, Yahoo!'s Regional Public Policy Director, who seems to think it still stands a chance of being approved

Giving Yahoo the Heave-Ho

It's been quite a ride, and I'm really going to miss Yahoo. I'll miss the parking debates and all the "random" stuff we're so fond of ranting about. Watching from the outside is going to be a very different experience. But the opportunity to work in a much smaller company recently presented itself and it was simply too interesting to pass up. I'll say more about that in the coming weeks.

Radical Openness

It's the new buzzword:


Yahoo Inc. is swinging the doors of its Web platforms wide open to let outside developers create applications across its network of sites and is radically stitching together its online services under the social profile concept.

The idea is to let the hundreds of millions of people who use its Web mail, instant messaging, calendar, photo management and other online services replicate the social experience that social networks like MySpace and Facebook have made so popular.

Comune di Milano = Microsoft's Mugs

Here's an extraordinary - and extraordinarily depressing - story from Stefano Maffulli about the Comune di Milano (roughly the Milan city council) pushing to its citizens some free services from Microsoft for, er, free:

Incomprensibile: perché il Comune si fa veicolo di pubblicità per Microsoft senza avere niente in cambio? Si sono resi conto gli alti dirigenti del Comune che la maggior parte di quei servizi sono già offerti da Microsoft (e da Yahoo e Google e Tiscali ecc ecc) gratuitamente? Che valore sperano di offrire così ai cittadini?

[Unbelievable: why is the Comune providing publicity for Microsoft without getting anything in return? Don't the eminences of the Comune realise that the majority of those services are already offered by Microsoft (and by Yahoo and Google and Tiscali etc. etc.) free of charge? What do they hope to offer of value to citizens acting like this?]

Microsoft's Finances

Much of Microsoft's power - particularly the kind used in bluffing - flows from an unwritten assumption that it is a huge, vastly-profitable company, with almost limitless resources. The limitless resources bit will certainly change if it acquires Yahoo, since it has admitted that it will need to borrow something like $20 billion to finance that transaction. But there is increasing evidence that even without that gargantuan meal to pay for, Microsoft's financials are not as rosy as they seem.

One of the most assiduous followers of this angle is Roy Schestowitz. The only problem has been that his posts on the subject have been running for so long that there is something of a rat's nest of links to follow on on his site if you want to see the big picture.

Happily, he has just put together a consolidated piece that links to all the main pieces of the puzzle:

An Open Marriage Made in Heaven?

Maybe Microsoft and Yahoo *are* made for each other. After all, both seem to have got the hots for openness - first Microsoft, and now Yahoo:

"Yahoo Buzz is a good example of how we are continuing to innovate and open up our key starting points to third party publishers, making Yahoo! more social and personally relevant for our half a billion consumers," said Jeff Weiner, executive vice president, Yahoo! Network Division. "In addition, we recently announced that we will be opening up our user interface for Yahoo! Search, as well as creating a smarter inbox by opening up Yahoo! Mail, two other key ways that consumers start with Yahoo!."

Hip-hip-Hadoop!

Just one more reason why the Microsoft-Yahoo merger, if it happens, will be hell:


Yahoo is following in Google’s footsteps again in search. Today, it is shifting a crucial part of its search engine to Hadoop, software that handles large-scale distributed computing tasks particularly well. Hadoop is an open-source implementation of Google’s MapReduce software and file system.

...

Yahoo is replacing its own software with Hadoop and running it on a Linux server cluster with 10,000 core processors.

Go that? 10,000 core processors running GNU/Linux at the heart of Yahoo. Microsoft is damned if they do (rip and replace) and damned if they don't. Go on, make our day, Steve....

OpenID - and Openness - Is Winning

I am very happy to be able to say that Google, IBM, Microsoft, VeriSign and Yahoo are joining the OpenID Foundation (on whose board I sit.) It marks the end of a lot of hard work by all parties involved, as well as -- at least for me personally -- the hope that we will be able to get a decentralized federated single sign-on technology across the internet.

MS-Yow!, not MS-Yahoo! for Open Source

The Microsoft-Yahoo merger meme has been out and about for ages. It's not hard to see why Microsoft finally decided to jump: the decline in Yahoo's share price has been pretty precipitous in the last three months, and it's obviously reached a too-good-to-refuse level.

And I have to say that were I in Microsoft's position, I'd do the same: the fit looks good, and it would give the company a chance of fighting back against Google - something that looks hopeless, currently.

But as I wrote when I considered this idea last year, I have this feeling that if the deal goes through, Microsoft won't be looking very kindly on the open source software that Yahoo owns - such as Zimbra - or uses - like MySQL.

Why not? Well, one of the areas where Microsoft is getting whupped by free software is in top-end clusters. Moreover, the open source world continually throws in its face that Google, the very acme of computer power, runs on GNU/Linux, albeit a customised version. So what better way to show that Windows is fully the equal of the latter for extreme computing conditions than to turn Yahoo into a high-profile advertisement for the power of Windows (and SQLServer) on clusters?

To be sure, that would be more expensive than sticking with Yahoo's current choices, but Microsoft is playing for high stakes, and willing to gamble accordingly - as this $45 billion proposed acquisition of Yahoo demonstrates only too clearly.

Larry Sanger's Question

Larry Sanger has a question about Citizendium:

Suppose we grow to Wikipedian size. This is possible, however probable you think it might be.

Suppose, also, that, because we are of that size, we have the participation of a sizable portion of all the leading intellectuals of the world, in every field–and so, there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of approved articles. These are all long, complete with many links, bibliography, etc., etc.–all the subpage stuff. It’s reference utopia. Far better than Wikipedia has any hope of becoming.

Here’s the question, then. If we use a license that permits commercial reuse–CC-by-sa or GFDL–then every major media company in the world could, and probably would, use CZ content. Do you favor a license that allows CBS, Fox, the New York Times, English tabloids, Chinese propaganda sheets, Yahoo!, Google, and all sorts of giant new media companies to come, to use our content? Without compensation?

That's the question that Linus faced over a decade ago when he decided to adopt the GNU GPL instead of the earlier one that forbade any kind of money changing hands. And as Linus has said many times, choosing the GNU GPL was one of the best decisions he ever made, because it has widened support for Linux enormously, and as a result has driven its development even faster.

There's your answer, Larry....

Yahoo! Goes Whoop! About Hadoop! (and Pig!)

Now why on earth would Yahoo be doing this?

Yahoo! Inc., a leading global Internet company, today announced that it will be the first in the industry to launch an open source program aimed at advancing the research and development of systems software for distributed computing. Yahoo!'s program is intended to leverage its leadership in Hadoop, an open source distributed computing sub-project of the Apache Software Foundation, to enable researchers to modify and evaluate the systems software running on a 4,000 processor supercomputer provided by Yahoo!. Unlike other companies and traditional supercomputing centers, which focus on providing users with computers for running applications and for coursework, Yahoo!'s program focuses on pushing the boundaries of large-scale systems software research.

Currently, academic researchers lack the hardware and software infrastructure to support Internet-scale systems software research. To date, Yahoo! has been the primary contributor to Hadoop, an open source distributed file system and parallel execution environment that enables its users to process massive amounts of data. Hadoop has been adopted by many groups and is the software of choice for supporting university coursework in Internet-scale computing. Researchers have been eager to collaborate with Yahoo! and tap the company's technical leadership in Hadoop-related systems software research and development.

As a key part of the program, Yahoo! intends to make Hadoop available in a supercomputing-class data center to the academic community for systems software research. Called the M45, Yahoo!'s supercomputing cluster, named after one of the best known open star clusters, has approximately 4,000 processors, three terabytes of memory, 1.5 petabytes of disks, and a peak performance of more than 27 trillion calculations per second (27 teraflops), placing it among the top 50 fastest supercomputers in the world.

M45 is expected to run the latest version of Hadoop and other state-of-the-art, Yahoo!-supported, open-source distributed computing software such as the Pig parallel programming language developed by Yahoo! Research, the central advanced research organization of Yahoo! Inc.

It's cool that Yahoo's backing the open source Hadoop, and doubly cool that one of the projects is called Pig. But it's also shrewd. It's becoming abundantly clear that open beats closed; Google, for all its use of open source software, is remarkably closed at its core. Enter Hadoop, running on a 4,000 processor supercomputer provided by Yahoo, with the real possibility of spawning a truly open rival to Google.... (Via Matt Asay.)

Another Reason DRM is Dead...

Here's someone else who gets it: Yahoo Music VP of Product Development, Ian Rogers.

I’m here to tell you today that I for one am no longer going to fall into this trap. If the licensing labels offer their content to Yahoo! put more barriers in front of the users, I’m not interested. Do what you feel you need to do for your business, I’ll be polite, say thank you, and decline to sign. I won’t let Yahoo! invest any more money in consumer inconvenience. I will tell Yahoo! to give the money they were going to give me to build awesome media applications to Yahoo! Mail or Answers or some other deserving endeavor. I personally don’t have any more time to give and can’t bear to see any more money spent on pathetic attempts for control instead of building consumer value. Life’s too short. I want to delight consumers, not bum them out.

Yahoo is set to make yet another acquisition–this time of white-label open-source email provider Zimbra. Sources close to the deal said that the Internet portal will pay $350 million, considerably upwards of its most recent valuation, for the email and calendar provider.

Microsoft +Yahoo! = MegaHard!!!

Very interesting development here: Microsoft is starting to pursue Yahoo. This is completely logical: Microsoft is getting so utterly trounced by Google that it needs to bulk up fast in the online search sector and its related fields.

Of course, integrating two such companies would be a hugely challenging task, and might be disastrous for both. But assuming it happens and doesn't collapse under its own weight, such a merger would also have very interesting repercussions for open source.

After all, Google is pretty wedded to free software as a competitive weapon against Microsoft, whereas Yahoo is probably more neutral on the matter. If Microsoft got its mitts on Yahoo, that would undoubtedly change, and its offerings would become far more Windows-centric - at which point, things would start to get really nasty.

It's certainly a cool scoop for the New York Post, but I do wonder about their subs (maybe they trained on the Grauniad):

Microsoft and Yahoo! also feature complimentary offerings on the content side, with MSN drawing an older audience with its news focus.

I'm not sure their very complimentary at the moment, but doubtless they will become that way if Microsoft pulls this off.
