Free Music Goes Mainstream

What's interesting about this piece in the Guardian describing how the music industry is finally waking up to the virtues of free is that it brings together most of the arguments that I and others (notably Mike Masnick on Techdirt) have been banging on about for years. Looks like the industry has (almost) got it. We shall see.

Glyn,
The bar for (almost) getting it must be (almost) on the ground, given that Qtrax requires a proprietary player for its DRM-infested offerings.

Well, I wasn't commenting so much on the Qtrax announcement as the Guardian feature that took the line that free is the new black - and buttressed it with all the arguments many of us have been making for a while.

As I indicated above, I'm more interested in the meme than the details - sure, they're still fighting. But the pressure is building.....
