They had an identical deal running in January that expired at the end of the month, it seems to me to be a special discount just for the Linux boxes, probably funded by you know who?
I haven’t looked at this deal, but then, the Vista machines had more memory and nVidia by default, even with the discount! That lead me to weigh up the guilt of ordering a Vista laptop and replacing it with Ubuntu. I decided to just find another laptop.
On another note, I have had 4 friends/family members back in Canada who would have bought an Ubuntu GNU/Linux Dell this past year. But Dell still isn't offering Ubuntu to Canadians.
I have been a technology journalist and consultant for nearly 30 years, covering
the Internet since March 1994, and the free software world since 1995.
One early feature I wrote was for Wired in 1997:
The Greatest OS that (N)ever Was.
My most recent books are Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution, and Digital Code of Life: How Bioinformatics is Revolutionizing Science, Medicine and Business.

Yes, my cynical mind had also wondered whether there might be some conscious targeting going on here...

I'm scratching my head wondering why.
You can't help feeling that Dell's heart isn't entirely in this programme - now why might that be?
